Help those affected by Hurricane Sandy

Thanksgiving Message to New Yorkers

Dear Fellow New Yorker,
Every year, Thanksgiving is an important time for families and individuals to gather and recount the blessings of the past year and appreciate all we have been given.
This year's Thanksgiving comes at a particularly challenging time for New York State, as residents on Long Island, in New York City, and the lower Hudson Valley are still feeling the pain and effects of Hurricane Sandy. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I urge all New Yorkers to consider pitching in during this holiday season to help and give whatever support possible to assist families and individuals who are beginning to rebuild and recover after this devastating storm.
Click here to learn more about ways to help your fellow New Yorkers affected by Hurricane Sandy.
In difficult times, New Yorkers are always the first to lend a hand to help their neighbors, and it is this spirit of generosity and kindness that keeps our state strong and united. I wish all New Yorkers a happy and blessed Thanksgiving.

Sincerely,

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo

NYC Districting Commission Final Draft

Subject: NYC Districting Commission Final Draft

November 16, 2012

Dear fellow New Yorker:

The NYC Districting Commission today approved a revised plan for the boundaries of the fifty-one City Council districts in the City of New York. The revised plan follows the Commission's second round of public hearings, held in all five boroughs, and extensive outreach by Commission staff.

Over the course of four months, communities throughout the five boroughs shared with the Commission their views as to how they would like the districts to be drawn. During the course of this process, over 1,157 people attended the public hearings and more than 350 of those provided testimony. The Commission also received comments from nearly 5,300 individuals who submitted statements via e-mail or hard copy, and nearly 20 alternative maps that were submitted on-line and/or created in the Commission's "Resource Room" with the assistance of Commission staff. The Commission's Community Outreach team also addressed nearly 40 local community boards throughout the five boroughs educating the public about the districting process.

Having considered these recommendations, the Commission believes that the revised plan reflects what was shared with the Commission, within the legal restrictions set forth by the New York City Charter. Among the highlights of the revised plan is that it contains a total of 35 Council districts in which protected racial and language minority groups represent an overall majority of the total population in the council district—over two-thirds of the 51 total Council districts in the City. By comparison, this is five more of such districts than the previous 2003 districting plan, which had 30 "majority-minority" districts at the time of adoption. In addition, for the first time, Staten Island will have three districts wholly contained within its borders, and will no longer share representation with residents of Brooklyn.

The proposed City Council district plan can be viewed online through the Commission's website at http://www.nyc.gov/html/dc/html/maps/maps.shtml . Within a few days you may also view the proposed plan in person at the following locations:

Manhattan : NYC Districting Commission Office
253 Broadway, 7th Floor
New York, NY 10007

Bronx : Bronx Borough Hall
851 Grand Concourse, Suite 301
Bronx, NY 10451

Queens : Queens Public Library at Flushing
41-17 Main Street
Flushing, NY 11355

Brooklyn : Brooklyn Borough Hall
209 Joralemon Street
Brooklyn, NY 11209

Staten Island : Staten Island Borough Hall
10 Richmond Terrace
Staten Island, NY 10301

Pursuant to the requirements of the New York City Charter, the Commission submitted the revised plan to the City Council for its consideration. According to the Charter, the plan will be deemed adopted unless, within three weeks, the City Council adopts a resolution objecting to the plan and returns it to the Commission. If the City Council objects to the plan, the Commission will hold additional public hearings regarding the plan, on dates to be determined, before the plan is finalized by the Commission.

On behalf of the Commission, I thank you for your participation in the New York City Council districting process and encourage you to continue participating until a plan is finalized.

Sincerely,

Carl Hum

Executive Director

Children's Book Fair at the Brooklyn Museum

Yesterday, I got together with some of my favorite mamacitas and headed with the little ones to the Brooklyn Museum.  On, Saturday, November 17th from 12:00 noon to 4:00pm the Brooklyn Museum at 200 Eastern Parkway hosted the Sixth Annual Children’s Book Fair.  The entire lobby was a beautiful backdrop to host imaginative children’s book authors and illustrators from right here in Brooklyn.  It was a wonderful opportunity for children to interact with each other as they enjoyed storytelling and activities and family friendly performances.  I got to browse through many books and converse with authors and illustrators as they shared their creative inspiration.  There were so many amazing stories in the room but I could only choose a few.  I figured I would big up my Brooklyn pride with baby and get a few titles so that he will know from whence he came.  I brought home and autographed copy of:

B is for Brooklyn written and illustrated by Selina Alko.

Each of these represents much of the Brooklyn experience in a colorful and dynamic way.  The authors and artists featured reside here in New York.  If you are looking for special holiday gifts reach out to them for an autographed copy for the Brooklyn babies in your life!

Several Poll Site Location Changes Due to Hurricane Sandy

Our thoughts are with the residents of the City of New York affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Due to the damage incurred by Hurricane Sandy, the Board of Elections in the City of New York is temporarily relocating or combining some poll site locations across all five boroughs to ensure that voters are given the opportunity to exercise their right to vote.

With the assistance of multiple City agencies, especially the Governor’s and Mayor’s Offices and the Department of Education, the Board surveyed and assessed all poll sites in each borough and determined the usability and accessibility of each poll site in advance of this Tuesday’s election. We have consolidated some poll sites and found alternative locations for others. Below is a list of Brooklyn poll site location changes.

“Our staff, with the help of other local and state agencies, has been working around the clock to ensure a smooth Election Day for all New York voters,” said BOE President Maria R. Guastella. “I would like to thank the Campaign Finance Board for their assistance in helping us communicate the changes we have had to make prior to this election and assisting us with volunteers. Poll site relocations and modifications were deemed an important and necessary change in order to accommodate all voters.”

The Board urges New York voters to visit the poll site locator on our website or use our Smartphone application to verify their poll site location prior to Election Day this Tuesday, both of which have been updated to reflect these changes. Shuttle service will be provided to assist voters in getting to their poll sites in Coney Island, Far Rockaway and Staten Island. Additional information and routes will also be posted our website prior to Election Day.

“The Board appreciates the patience of New York voters as we make necessary modifications in the wake of this devastating and historic storm,” said Board Secretary Frederic M. Umane. “We encourage anyone with any questions to visit our website, use our poll site locator, or contact us directly.”

Due to the uncertainty to restoration efforts, please be advised that additional poll site changes could occur and we urge you to check your poll site location prior to Election Day. Please visit our website at www.vote.nyc.ny.us, or call 3-1-1, if you have any additional questions.
